A crescent shaped arc of floor to ceiling glass forms the back wall of this Will Bruder, FAIA designed property. Designed by Colwell Shelor as part of the 2012 guest-bedroom expansion, the primary patio combines curved concrete, steel planters, turf-covered steps, desert landscaping and a resin-filled gabion wall by Mayme Kratz to create a private outdoor room. The monumental pivot door that greets you at the entry is a sculptural element in its own right. Integrated storage follows the curve of the kitchen island, giving way to open views across the living and dining areas. From the living room, the McDowell Mountains become part of the composition—an ever-changing backdrop of desert, shadow and sky. From the driveway, the translucent fiberglass garage screen and Mayme Kratz’s resin-filled gabion wall introduce art, color and material contrast to the arrival experience. Viewed from the entrance to the office, the living room unfolds across multiple levels, creating distinct spaces for art, conversation and everyday living. Currently used as a media room, the downstairs living area opens to views of the natural desert landscape through expansive glass. Floor-to-ceiling glass brings the surrounding trees into the spacious primary bedroom, while motorized light-filtering and blackout shades provide privacy and light control when desired. The primary bath features a sculptural resin tub with carefully framed views of the mountains beyond Dual vanities in the primary bath pair stainless steel with warm wood cabinetry, while expansive mirrors reflect the surrounding desert. Between the primary suite and guest bedroom, an intimate courtyard connects the two spaces with turf-covered steps, desert landscaping and steel planters integrated into the hardscape. Connecting the office and living room, this glass-lined space offers views into the desert landscape and the potential to be converted into an additional bedroom. Custom cabinetry follows the curve of the sunken living room, reinforcing the circular geometry that shapes the home. Rewired in 2012, the home features surround sound and an integrated Crestron system controlling audio, lighting, shades and thermostats. Upon entry, the home opens to a layered composition of space, art and views beyond. The transition from solid concrete to translucent acrylic and back again, creates yet another unexpected interplay of weight, material and light. An intentional yet whimsical splatter of paint helps remind the viewer that they are standing inside a true piece of art. Viewed from the ground outside the office, the home’s curvilinear form reveals how naturally the architecture moves through the desert landscape. The crescent-shaped stainless steel countertop follows the home’s geometry, placing Mummy Mountain directly in view from the kitchen sink. Just off the kitchen, this Colwell Shelor-designed turf area creates a playful outdoor space beside the home’s curved metal exterior. This guest bedroom offers a ensuite bathroom, walk-in closet, direct courtyard access and custom-made sheer and blackout curtains that follow the curve of the room, providing filtered light, privacy or complete darkness. This spacious guest bedroom includes an en suite bath and a private exit to the driveway, while small windows set into the curved masonry wall and a narrow skylight above the bed introduce natural light. The primary bedroom’s generous proportions create distinct areas for sleeping and seating within its private wing of the home. A peek into the primary suite. Open to nature yet protected by the mature landscape and vastness of the lot. A see-through fireplace anchors the living room without interrupting its connection to the desert landscape beyond. From the entrance to the hallway to the primary wing, the living room opens toward the kitchen and glass-enclosed atrium beyond. From the driveway, the three-car garage recedes behind a unique fiberglass screen while the entrance remains quietly defined within the architecture. Created by renowned artist Mayme Kratz, this illuminated gabion wall is filled with resin, bringing color, texture and a warm glow to the courtyard. The hallway leading to the primary suite is designed as a gallery, transforming the transition between spaces into another place to experience art. Between the upper and lower levels, an acrylic landing creates a true loft space, framed by exposed masonry walls and a perforated metal balcony screen. The circular office is wrapped in custom-made stainless steel shelving, with a powder bath tucked discreetly into the back wall. A unique Will Bruder design, the translucent fiberglass screen conceals the garage entrance while softly filtering light into the arrival sequence. From the driveway, the translucent fiberglass garage screen and Mayme Kratz’s resin-filled gabion wall introduce art, color and material contrast to the arrival experience. A carefully placed overhang provides shelter from the elements while preserving a framed glimpse of Mummy Mountain as you enter the property. A small overhang projects from the curved concrete-block form, creating a striking contrast between straight lines and rounded geometry. A view from the outside looking into the media room. There is plenty of room to expand the outdoor living space or even add a pool off of this patio. A view from the outside into the living room. Shaded by mature trees, the floor to ceiling glass walls allow for a seamless transition from outside to inside. Viewed from below, the downstairs, office and living room follow the natural contours of the site, allowing the architecture to settle into the desert rather than compete with it. The primary wing feels both open to the desert yet completely private. Birds eye view of the 5 concentric circles that organize the floor plan of this unique home. Small windows such as this one are strategically placed within the architecture to allow the transference of light and projection of playful shadows. A pop of color on this sliding door is a special hidden Will Bruder design surprise. A circular skylight creates a portal to the sky, centering the dining table beneath shifting desert light. A projector and screen descend from the ceiling when desired, transforming the living room for movie nights while remaining concealed when not in use.

Property Description
An irreplaceable work of Arizona modernism, the Townsend Residence known as ''Hummingbird House'' was designed by Will Bruder, FAIA, and originally built by Stonecreek Building Company. Privately set on Mummy Mountain, the home is remarkably quiet and peaceful, with shifting views of the mountains, desert and sky. Five intersecting circles organize the architecture while a monumental pivot door creates a dramatic arrival. Concrete, steel and glass form a sculptural setting for art and everyday living. Later remodels by Will Bruder Architects and Jack DeBartolo continued the original vision. Stonecreek returned with the same steel artisans involved in the original construction, creating a rare continuity of design and craftsmanship. Colwell Shelor designed the surrounding hardscape and
